5 days to go – WCH 2018 W: Meet Pool A

While we are waiting for the start of the World Championship 2018 in Japan, let's take a look at the Pools. Starting from Pool A who will take place in Yokohama.

Argentina

Argentina are making their sixth appearance in the FIVB World Championship this year. It is the first time in the nation’s history that they return for back-to-back appearances after finishing 17th in 2014. Their debut in the competition was in 1960, where they ended in eighth place, their best performance to date.

Their oldest player is a libero Tatiana Rizzo who has 31 years while the youngest is Victoria Michel Tosi who has 19. But their most experienced player is Emilce Sosa who until now played 123 matches.

Cameroon

Cameroon are competing in the FIVB World Championship for the third time, after finishing 21st in both their previous appearances (2006, 2014).

Their oldest player is a libero Victoire Pauline L’or Ngon Ntame who has 32 years while the youngest is their second libero Reine Ngameni Mbopda Davina who has only 15 years.

Germany

Germany take part this year in the FIVB World Championship for the seventh time since reunification. Their best finish in the World Championship as a united country came in 1994, when they finished in fifth place. In the 2017 edition, Germany were knocked out by hosts Azerbaijan 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

They finished 13th in the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League this year, posting a 5-10 record.

Their oldest player is the captain Maren Fromm who has 32 years while the youngest is Pia Kastner who has 20 years.

Middle blockers: Marie Scholzel, Barbara Wezorke and Lisa Gründing

Japan

Japan won the FIVB World Championship title three times (1962, 1967, 1974) and also claimed silver in 1978, but had to wait 32 years before their next World Championship medal, when they won bronze on home soil in 2010. In the most recent edition, in 2014, Japan finished seventh.

Together with Brazil and the USA, Japan are the joint-second most prolific participants in the competition, making their 16th appearance. They have missed just two editions in the history of the competition, in 1952 and 1956.

Japan are one of only two teams, along with China, to have played in all 25 editions of the FIVB World Grand Prix. However, they only have one medal; a silver in the 2014 edition, when they hosted the Final Six in Tokyo. Japan ranked 10th in the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League this year, with a 7-8 record in pool play.

Their oldest player is Erika Araki who has 34 years and with the most games in the jersey (214) while the youngest is Sarina Koga who has 22 years.

Mexico

Mexico make their eighth appearance this year in the FIVB World Championships. They made their debut in the competition in 1970 and had their best placing to-date at the very next edition four years later, which they hosted in Guadalajara, finishing 10th. At the last World Championship in 2014, Mexico finished 21st.

Their oldest player is libero Lizette Lopez who has 28 years while the youngest is Melanie Perra who has 16 years.

The Netherlands

The Netherlands will have their eighth consecutive and 14th overall appearance at the FIVB World Championship. Their best World Championship ranking so far is the seventh place (1998).

The Dutch made it through to the Final Six of the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League this year, narrowly missing out on the medals and finishing fifth.

Their oldest player is libero Myrthe Schoot who has 30 years while the youngest is Nicole Oude Luttikhuis who has 20 years.
