Amadio on training
Faroe Islands are an archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic, approximately halfway between Norway and Iceland. The area is approximately 1,400 square kilometres, having a population of 49,188 (data from 2016). Volleyball is not a professional sport there but one guy has a chance to change this, a 32-year-old Italian coach Daris Amadio. He took his first steps as a coach in famous Men’s team from his country Sisley Treviso, where he was a member of a staff. Afterwards, he was a statistician and assistant coach in Cameroonian Men’s National Team before accepting job as Australian Men’s U23 National Team head coach. Amadio has also participated in several summer volleyball camps in the United States. Then, he agreed to move to the Faroe Islands in January, despite not knowing much about the country.
He became coach of Women’s top division club Tb-Flogboltur, where he holds training during the week and competing in the national championship on the weekends during which he and his team are forced to travel two hours with a ferry to the capital city Tórshavn to play.
“People at Faroe Islands are passionate to the sport, but play too many and do not focus on one. For example, the boys play volleyball from November to January. Then, they move on the football field. Volleyball aside, life here is not very live: for this reason I’m looking through the people of the club to find a job in the morning in order to keep me busy all day. In addition, work would allow me to meet other people,” said Amadio.
