The European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) announced new rankings of the national teams after a slight confusion caused by counting only the highest number of points for each team in case of their participation at all relevant tournaments for the ranking, not summing them.

OG2016

The newest CEV ranking in both competitions will form the Olympic qualifying rounds in January.

Recall, in the men’s competition, besides the host country Germany, seven the highest ranked teams which have not yet qualified to the Olympic Games will play the Qualifiers (Berlin, January 5-10, 2016). In women’s competition, it’s the same case, but with Turkey as hosts (Ankara, January 4-9, 2016).

In men’s competition, Italy booked their spot throughout World Cup in Japan, while in women’s, Serbia did the same.

According to the newest CEV ranking, the pools for European Qualifiers wil look like this…

Male competition:

Pool A: Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Slovakia

Pool B: Russia, Serbia, France, Finland

Female competition:

Pool A: Turkey, Germany, Poland, Croatia

Pool B: Italy, Russia, the Netherlands, Belgium.

I keep wondering why National Volleyball Federations in Europe don’t protest against what CEV and FIVB do to them and to the sports itself. In this case, what’s the point of organizing European Championship which – this year – is basically just another game for medals that gives you nothing but ranking points and ‘prestige’… oh wait, what prestige? Eurovolley takes place every two years, so the prestige thing is, in my opinion, debatable. Besides, why bother this time if in January there’s a really important or rather REAL European Championship that will get ONE team from Europe to the Olympics? This is ridiculous. Nothing but money and greed.
