The 6th attempt was the lucky one for them. After losing 5 World League Finals, Serbia have managed to break the curse and to win the gold medal in 2016!

One of the team leaders Marko Podraščanin stated for WorldofVolley that Serbian squad have learned a valuable lesson from the last year.

“Finally! This was the 6th World League Finals for Serbia, while it was the 4th for me. We are very happy that we have finally managed to win the gold. This was our best game at the tournament definitely. Despite we were not the favorites in the clash against Brazil, we have learned a lesson from the previous year when we kind of celebrated the win in the semifinals too much. Therefore, we knew that we need to forget the win against Italy as soon as possible and to focus on the big match against Brazil. I think that we played very good from the first to the last minute in the finals.”

Serbia were once again exceptional from the service line, like in every other match during the World League 2016…

“Yes, those good serves have become a real trademark of our team in the World League 2016. Too bad that we did not serve like this in January, during the Olympic Qualification Tournament, but there is nothing we can do now about that right now. We should stay positive. This gold medal is a present to the Serbian people and to our coach Nikola Grbić who cried at the end of the match. “
