Felipe Fonteles ’Lipe’ has a dream which says – Brazil will win the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. But, he is aware that it is a dream which will come true only by leaving the last drop of his sweat. And his teammates’, too.
He does not only expect to compete in the Olympics this summer, but also to find a new club. Lipe gave an interview to our website regarding both matters.
How important to you is to win the 2016 FIVB World League knowing the Olympic Games are about to come soon afterwards?
„The goal is always to win. Of course, this is very important series of matches from which we will learn a lot for the future. But, of course, we always play to win because it’s been a while since we last time won the World League.“
Which teams might spoil Brazil’s aspirations to win the gold medal in Rio?
„I see six teams as serious gold medal contenders. We can talk about USA, Russia, France, Italy, Brazil and Poland. So, it’s not about one of two teams. Many teams can do it and it will be a tough tournament as the World League is, too. But, I really like that because it’s better when you win by playing against tough opponents. Olympics will be a very good show for everybody and I think we can achieve our biggest objective, to win the gold medal.“
Do you have an image in your head what would it be like to win the Olympic gold medal in front of your people?
„I really dream about it. I work a lot on my mental strength by imagining matches and to win the gold medal inside ’Maracanãzinho’ filled with our fans, since the tickets have been sold out, would be a dream come true. This dream is not far. We have everything in our hands to achieve it as, of course, the other five teams have. Still, I think we have enough quality to bring the gold medal home.“
You parted ways with Funvic/Taubaté and you are a free agent at the moment. What are your plans for the next season?
„I didn’t sign a contract with anyone yet. I’m looking for it. I was hoping for the Rio team that supposed to join Superliga, but they didn’t. I have long talks with one team from Iran. So, I think that this season I will go abroad and play, maybe, in Europe again or Iran...“ Lipe remained mysterious.
