The Peruvian Women’s Volleyball National Team can brag that one of its players made, probably, the most spectacular save in the history of this sports discipline.
The setter Elena Keldibekova, she retired in 2013, made a SPECTACULAR defense in the South American Qualification Tournament for the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Japan. It occurred in the opening game against Argentina, on July 22, 2009, in Betim, Brazil. Peru won by a 3-2 (16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12), finishing the tournament in the second place behind the Brazilian NT, but it was enough to secure them a berth in the World Champs.
As for Keldibekova, she is a Kazakhstan-born player, who moved to Peru when she was 19 and got married to Peruvian volleyball player Johnny Westreicher. She was awarded Best Setter of the South American Championship once and Pan-American Cup three times.
