Mariana Galon, the setter of the Brazilian top division side Curitiba Vôlei setter, announced her retirement from playing Volleyball at the age of 25. Through social networks, she informed that she was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which can cause sudden death in athletes. The disease, in which a portion of the heart becomes thickened, was confirmed by the club and identified during pre-season examinations.

Galon is born in Mexico but has Brazilian citizenship. Prior to Curitiba, she was playing Superliga for São Cristóvão Saúde/São Caetano, Dentil/Praia Clube and Vôlei Valinhos.

The disease that Galon has allows people to have a normal and healthy life, but not as professional athletes, because in case of making efforts, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting and even death.

Recall that, a few months back, another Brazilian female Volleyball player was diagnosed with heart problems.
