ECH U16 W: France’s 14-year-old Vaki dashes Germany’s hopes of reaching semis, Slovenia say thanks

The preliminary round of the second edition of the CEV U16 Women’s Volleyball European Championship, held in Croatia and Italy, came to an end with only one berth for the semifinals being vacant prior to it.

 

Slovenia took the last remained semifinal spot as they beat Finland on the final day of the preliminary round. Prior to the last day of the competition before the semis, Russia sovereignly claimed the No.1 in Pool 1 (Zagreb, Croatia) with a perfect record (5-0 and 15 points) and giving away only one set. Germany entered the last day of the preliminary round as favorites to seize the other remained semifinal spot from this pool knowing that they had 2 points more than Slovenia (8-6) and needed to take only 2 sets in the match against France. But, they lost despite prevailing in the opening set: 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19). French players were amazing in the service as a team with 20 aces! A 14-year-old Vaiteani Vaki, who plays for the youth team of Sens Olympique Club VB, top-scored for France with 15 points.

 

Being aware of Germany’s defeat, Slovenia knew their way to the final four is wide open so, they have surpassed Finland in straight sets with 19 points of Naja Šalamun. The member of Formula Formis youth team served as much as 8 aces.

In the penultimate round, Turkey and co-hosts Italy secured their places in the semifinals from Pool 2 (Trieste) and battled for the top spot on the last day. Turkey were better by a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-22) thanks to 14 points from Eczacıbaşı VitrA youth team member Pelin Eroktay.

Italy – Turkey 0-3 (15-25, 16-25, 22-25)

Otherwise, the continental championships are useless because they no longer give world ranking points.
