#RoadToTokyo W: Poland beat Dutch team to secure promotion to semifinals

The Poland National Team defeated the Netherlands in front of 6,000 spectators to secure promotion to the semifinals of the 2020 European Women's Volleyball Olympic Qualifier in Apeldoorn.

Poland needed to take only 2 sets in Round 3 match of Pool A against the hosts to advance to the semifinals. After winning the 1st set, in the next, they led by a 22-17 and 24-21, but the Netherlands didn’t intend to surrender. At 24-23, Malwina Smarzek-Godek made a kill. The referee immediately asked for the video check if the ball was inside. It turned out not to be, so Poland head coach Jacek Nawrocki decided to check if any of the opponents touched the ball in the block. A replay showed that Anne Buijs touched it. Poland got a point, the set, and started a celebration.

Malwina Smarzek-Godek tallied 25 points for Poland, while Agnieszka Kąkolewska made 5 kill blocks. Floortje Meijners scored 15 points for the “Oranje”, Yvon Beliën set up 7 kill blocks.

The Dutch team already secured a place in the semifinals, yesterday. In case Poland beat Azerbaijan in the last round, they will claim No.1, while the hosts will go to the knockout stage as the 2nd placed side.
