The Turkish duo Eczacibasi VitrA İstanbul (Pool A) and VakifBank İstanbul (Pool B), as well as Italian champions Antonio Carraro Imoco Conegliano (Pool D), had already secured their spots in the quarterfinals as leaders of their respective pools in the penultimate round of the pool stage.
The most titled club in the competition, Dinamo Moscow (11 trophies) from Russia, cruised past French RC Cannes (3-0) to top Pool E, while the defending champions Igor Gorgonzola Novara (Italy) swept Polish titleholders ŁKS Commercecon Łódź to claim No.1 in Pool C.

The Italian side Savino Del Bene Scandicci had difficulties to outplay written-off Nova KBM Branik Maribor from Slovenia (3-1) but finished first in the overall ranking of the best vice-leaders, looking at all pools, with 5-1 record and 13 points. Turkish Fenerbahçe Opet İstanbul and German titleholders Allianz MTV Stuttgart recorded straight-set victories to line up behind Scandicci in the ranking and book quarterfinal tickets.
