Another chapter of the Dominican Republic Women’s Volleyball national team history has been written, the second in only two days!

After beating Russia on Day 1 of the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League – Preliminary Round for the first time in the history when it comes to world-level tournaments, the Dominican Republic national team made another stunt a day later. The Caribbean side defeated Pool 3 hosts Brazil by a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 28-26), which was their first win over “Seleção” in a major official competition under the FIVB after 20 failures in a row.

This might as well be the wakeup call for Brazil in face of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Qualifications that will be held in August, knowing that one of their rivals in the tournament is going to be exactly the Dominican Republic.

Bethania De La Cruz top-scored for the Dominicans with 20 points, while Gabriela Guimarães “Gabi” poured in 29 for Brazil.

The national team of Russia achieved the first victory in the 2019 Nations League. Despite having the most debutants in the list for some world-level competition in the history, Russia managed to beat one of the best national teams in the world China (without star players like Zhu Ting and Li Yingying) by a 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-16, 25-23).

Tatiana Iurinskaia brought in 17 points to Russia national team, while Ekaterina Efimova set up 5 kill blocks. Lui Yanhan top-scored for China with 18 points. Hu Mingyuan made 5 kill blocks.

They should just make the continental championships this year the Olympic Qualification to reduce the number of useless tournaments. Otherwise, the continental championships are useless because they no longer give world ranking points. Particularly for Asia, where Iran has not finished well since 2013 because they do not care about the tournament and send a weaker team instead of their main team. Reply
