VNL 2019 W: Brazil run over Russia in front of 10,000 fans, China note their 1st win

Brazil showed a consistent display against the young team of Russia in Pool 3 to finish the first week of the 2019 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League – Preliminary Round with a 2-1 record.


In a beautiful atmosphere of the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in Brasília, with the presence of nearly 10,000 spectators, Brazil national team responded well on the court after being upset by the Dominican Republic yesterday and beat full-of-debutants Russia in straight sets, partially 25-15, 25-17, and 25-14. The “Seleção” dominated in the block, holding a 14-5 margin.

Brazil’s highlight of the match was Ana Paula Borgo who scored 17 points, while Mara Leão and Gabriela Guimarães “Gabi” set up 4 kill blocks apiece. A 19-year-old outside hitter Tainara Santos made her debut in the senior squad of Brazil.


China recovered from losing the opening set to inflict the first defeat in the tournament to the Dominican Republic: 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23). Thus, the Asian side scored its first victory in 2019 Nations League.

Duan Fang top-scored for China with 23 points, while Yang Hanyu made 4 kill blocks. Brayelin Martínez notched 22 points for the Caribbean side, including 4 kill blocks.

Not sure anyone knows who the USA's A1 or A2 team is yet. Clearly USA was ready to play and China was not. The USA pounded the Chinese from the service line.
