VNL 2019 M: World champions Poland powerless before Poletaev, Iran sweep Canada

Russia recorded the sixth successive win in the 2019 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League.


Russia surpassed world champions Poland on Day 1 (Week 3) in Pool 11 by a 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19), recording the sixth straight win in the 2019 VNL (6-1).

It was Viktor Poletaev’s night as he poured in 18 points, while Ivan Yakovlev set up 4 kill blocks. Bartosz Kwolek top-scored for Poland with 15. Jakub Kochanowski made 4 kill blocks. Poland are at 4-3.


Iran (6-1) took the first win against Canada (4-3) at a major world-level tournament after suffering three defeats prior to Pool 11 match in the 2019 VNL at home soil in Urmia.

Amir Ghafour notched 16 points for Iran in a straight-set victory, while Stephen Maar made 13 for Canada.

Brazil – Serbia 2-3 (25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 20-25, 12-15)

Japan – Italy 1-3 (25-23, 15-25, 27-29, 21-25)

Bulgaria – Australia 3-2 (20-25, 29-27, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13)

Pool 11 (Urmia, Iran):

Russia – Poland 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19)

Iran – Canada 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-16)

Pool 12 (Cannes, France):

USA – Argentina 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21)

France – Germany 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20)
