One of the most prominent world volleyball coaches of all time, Julio Velasco, decided to put an end to his career!

After 40 years of coaching, the Argentinean expert Julio Velasco decided to retire.

In his career, a 62-year-old coach has achieved many successes, both on a club level and with the national team. Velasco won four consecutive titles in the Italian Championship with Azimut Leo Shoes Modena, from 1986 to 1989. Before that he did the same in his home country. From 1979 to 1982 he won four national league titles with Ferro Carril Oeste. Then, he took over Italy Men’s national team and brought it to the title in the FIVB World Championship in 1990 and 1994, and in the CEV European Championship in 1989, 1993 and 1995, creating a so-called “Generation of phenomena “. In addition, he claimed trophies in the FIVB World League five times, FIVB World Cup and FIVB World Grand Champions Cup once each – all with the “Azzurri”. These trophies only represent a part of his collection.

Velasco also coached Italian clubs Tre Valli Jesi, Gas Sales Piacenza and Gabeca Montichiari, Men’s national teams of Argentina, Czech Republic, Spain and Iran and Women’s national team of Italy.

This season, Velasco returned to coaching Modena, reaching the semifinals of the SuperLega Credem Banca. Media in Italy mention Andrea Giani, current head coach of Revivre Axopower Milano, as a replacement for Velasco.

POL M: Heynen criticizes EuroVolley format – “It’s not good for Volleyball”

[@John Doek] Everyone criticised VNL, Heynen being one of them, when its formula was introduced. It is mainly the fault of VNL that there is so little time to rest and prepare for bigger tournaments in the second part of national season, there is too much matches to play. Reply

WC 2019 W: Netherlands surprisingly sweep Brazil on Balkestein’s birthday, China wreck Russia

I don't like the comment that Balkestein-Grothues underperformed! We all know she is there to receive and defend. As you said: 0 aces for Brazil, so she did a great job! Aswell did Schoot, who was almost perfect in receive and defence! Reply
