The home side overcame a huge resistance of Mexico in the first round of the 2020 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NORCECA) Olympic Qualification Tournament. Well-filled Palace of Sports Virgilio Travieso Soto (nearly 6,000 spectators) saw a dramatic match in which the team they cheered for nearly squandered a confident 2-set lead in sets. Driven by Samantha Bricio (26 points), Mexico leveled at 2-2 but failed to bypass strong Dominican block (19 kill blocks) in key moments of the tie-break. Brayelin Martínez also delivered 26 points but for the winning side for which Jineiry Martínez and Lisvel Eve set up 7 kill blocks apiece.
