The President of the All-Russian Volleyball Federation (VFV) Stanislav Shevchenko announced that the Finnish expert Tuomas Sammelvuo, who is at the helm of the country’s men’s national team, applied for Russian citizenship.

Shevchenko was asked by the media if the fact that foreign head coaches will lead both male and female national teams at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games bothers him.

“You need to understand that they aren’t really foreigners. Both live and work here for many years, they speak the Russian language. Tuomas has even applied for Russian citizenship,” he stated.

The 43-year-old Finnish expert took over Russia Men in March 2019, winning the Volleyball Nations League and earning a ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The “Zbornaya” underperformed at the CEV European Championship under his command, being eliminated in the quarter-finals. Sammelvuo also coaches Zenit Saint-Petersburg and, since 2016, he has been working in Kuzbass, leading them to conquer the Russian Championship last season.
