The story of a Bulgarian Ivaylo Stefanov, who seemed to be the oldest active men’s professional volleyball player at the moment, attracted a lot of attention from our readers. Thanks to them, we have learned that there is a guy who topped Stefanov on this rather interesting list.

Miguel Maia, a 46-year-old Portuguese setter, is actually the oldest men’s professional volleyball player in the world - for now! This means that Ivaylo Stefanov fell to No.2.

Maia competes with Sporting Clube de Portugal Lisboa, five-time champions of Portugal. And although Sporting won their last national title 23 years ago, Maia was involved in it. Actually, he was involved in three of the five Divisão A1 gold medals (1992, 1993, 1994) of the club. Other two came in the mid-‘50s.

Now, as a captain, Maia will lead Sporting to the first season in the Portuguese top division in 22 years. This is because the volleyball section, which is under the control of the sports club Sporting CP, was shut down in 1995.

I dont think people understand how affected this Brazilian team was affected by the negative news from their Government on pulling funding from sports teams and athletics in the country. it was a punch in the gut from a country that already is reeling with issues. Bruno was the one who publicly called the government out. Clearly he is affected. Its a darn shame. Reply
