MAJOR CHANGE? FIVB to introduce time limit for volleyball games?!!!

Source: Photo: FIVB

Football games last for 90 minutes (2x45), basketball games also have their time limit – 40 minutes (4x10) or 48 minutes in NBA (4x12)… But what about volleyball?

So far, the rules in volleyball were quite clear – Whoever wins 3 sets will win the game, without any time limitation. Theoretically, a volleyball game can last forever, if the ball never touches the floor. Of course, that has never and will never happen, but anyway volleyball matches can often last for more than two hours…

And that is something that TV stations are not happy about.

According to Bruno Voloch, FIVB understand that partnership with television networks is very important for volleyball itself, so they are willing to slightly change the rules of the game and make it more attractive for TV.

This source writes that FIVB General Secretary Luiz Fernando Lima came to the conclusion that the ideal time for a single volleyball match would be 1 hour and 45 minutes! Therefore, there is an option to make a time limit for each set at 25 minutes. If neither of teams wins the set (reaches the 25th point) in that period of time, the clock stops and whoever was in the lead in that moment will win the set!

The rule about the time limit for the tie-break is still being discussed.

The plan is to make the whole volleyball game fit into 1 hour and 45 minutes, including the commercial breaks between the sets.

We will see if these ideas actually become the new official rules of volleyball.

Tennis has not any time limit either and I don't see any TV complain , nor has Baseball and even Basket actually may last a lot longer that the time limit firstly it's game time so all the pauses don't count plus there is the extra time, again technically a basketball match could last forever

@Actually that's right, longest tennis matches in grand slam could last even 12 hours, of course it's not a game within one day, but it's much longer than volleybal match. sick idea

Maybe as a starting point we could talk about taking out the four timeouts, four challenges and two technical timeouts per set??

@Ed You have to make some breaks during the game. TO are ok, the only problems I see are TTO for 1m:30s.

How about make set point less than 25,,, like 20 / 15 or something. I think it probably fit in 25mins and it solves any other problem that time limit would have

@S.BAEK Also if you make 20 or 15 points there will not be any time frame. If the game finishes before? And even 5min more than scheduled time is a big problem for many TV stations. Time on TV is measured in seconds, not in minutes. And it costs a lot...
And also the other problem is that many TV don't want to put volleyball because there is no interest for this sport (unfortunately)

The problem with this is TV can care less about time restraints, etc., but more about viewership! Shows, sports, documentaries, etc. get on TV because they can sell advertising, and ads get sold if there are viewers, not due to times. We get it wrong all the time! What we need to do is not burn out our youth in the game, thus when they are old enough to purchase the products shown in the commercial ads they are still giving back to the game by watching or attending matches and are still passionate about the game. Another thing we could do is put aside our egos and actually invite those who can't play the game at the competitive level, but want to play it at the recreational level and inspire them to love the game. Too many 'competitive' recreational players with 'no invested interests' in the game at the local sand courts often push away our future fans by being jerks to those who just want to play recreationally (though I get some of the rec players think they know it all). I get it, you don't want to bring your level of play down, but...you once had to start at their level when you first picked up the game. One more thing, we, as club, high school, middle school and college coaches, can also be compassionate towards each other more by sharing our passion for the game instead of prides and egos creating monsters in each one of us. I feel volleyball has become the 'team sport' of golf! Look at soccer in America...back in the late 70s, early 80s both volleyball and soccer had an opportunity to grow their popularity in America. Well, which sport; that had really no chance back then, the one we called 'isn't real football', receives more popularity in America? If we could clean up much of these problems, maybe FIVB wouldn't be looking for alternative ways to put the sport on TV. Look at baseball...a game can take two hours or five hours, yet somehow TV finds a way to keep it on TV. We don't have the consistent fan base to sell ads!

Zaytsev to join Milano in the summer? Club president: “We must carefully evaluate the pros and cons”

Re: @dee jae69
Have you watch or seen the statistics of the final of Champions League?
Ivan Zaytsev with 14 pts 11 spikes(60% kill with only one fault)
Atanasijevic with only 9 pts 6 kills(32% 4 faults)

Conclusion:
Let's get rid of Zaytsev. Just funny. lol Reply

Zaytsev to join Milano in the summer? Club president: “We must carefully evaluate the pros and cons”

Re: @dee jae69 Check their wins. How many gold medals they have with Leon? How many gold medals they achieved without him? Zenit Kazan will be in bit trouble against the other heavyweights in Russia and Europe. With him on your side they dominated everyone besides Sada Cruzeiro until last year.
Anderson is getting old. He is very mediocre nowadays. He is not important to Zenit Kazan anymore. Only his serve is good. Mikhailov will soon be at his thirties. Poletaev may be good but he needs to prove himself in another club while Mikhailov still reigns supreme as Russia's best opposite.

Atanasijevic's contract will end this year. Same as Zaytsev. One of them will leave if Wilfredo Leon signs a contract with Perugia
Atanasijevic should leave. He chokes in crucial moments. I'd rather have Zaytsev who plays with all his heart, a more reliable player in the end game and a complete player with all the skills in the world a player could ask for. He is also a better team player.

Re: @duh
yes when mikayhlov was injured, the young poletaev played for zenit during the russian championship the setter is grbic and the mvp is anderson. i followed zenit kazan. i know their history. what i mean is that zenit kazan can still dominate even without leon. even leon was named most of kazan MVP the club can still be a force to be reckoned with, without him.

Sirci is dreaming winning CHAMPIONS LEAGUE and put PERUGIA in WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS stage like LUBE does to attract more SPONSORSHIPS and INVESTMENT. SIRCI thought HIRING Ivan Zaytsev can bring PERUGIA, Champions League Trophy and a Ticket to World Club Championships.

Sirci don't think about that. he is dreaming of LEON so no matter what IVAN has to leave. Russell and Atanasijevis contract until 2019 so the only player he need to release is IVAN. Reply
