WCH 2018 W: The Dutch girls dethrone USA, amazing display of Lonneke Sloetjes

1118 0

The Netherlands have advanced to the semifinals of the Women's Volleyball World Championship after beating the reigning champions the United States.

The Dutch girls had to work very hard to reach this victory as they were down by two sets!

After losing the first set after a long battle, the Netherlands lost its confidence, which had a huge influence on a performance in the second set. The Dutch side almost surrendered to allow the USA to double the lead.

However, it all has begun as of the start of the third set. It seemed like the girls from the United States already started thinking about the semifinals, which the Netherlands used, firstly to extend the game, afterwards to force the tie-break and to win a game.

With this victory, the USA won't be able to defend the crown, as China and the Netherlands are advancing to the semifinals. It's now up to them, in their final clash to decide who will go to the semis from the top spot, and who will play against the first placed team in the other Pool.

The Dutch relied on Sloetjes for their first victory over USA in a major world competition since 2007.

Lonneke Sloetjes had an amazing performance, finishing the game with 38 points. She was simply unstoppable in key moments. Celeste Plak has contributed with 16 points. On the other side, Michele Hackley had 17 points, while Karsta Lowe added 15, Rachael Adams 13 and Foluke Akinradewo 12.

The third stage, Pool H:

Netherlands - USA 3-2 (30-32, 15-25, 25-22, 25-15, 15-9)

First game:

China – USA  3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-9)

TUR W: VakıfBank’s hellish plan – Bartsch to come in January, Egonu in summer!

So Ebrar out and Haak will be replaced ? I suppose Ezcacibasi will respond, Kim is definately not in her league, i think Tijana need some partner, and Natalia is not the one. I still cant see Egonu moving from Italian league to Turkey, that must be some great payment to do so. Otherwise, i would like to see Brakocevic & Tijana in same club, no other option to respond to Vakif. Unless Natalia and Kim will push their game. Maybe Tijana should go to Novara, her season if nulled with this team. Reply

Re: @Anon - Zhu Ting is not gonna go anywhere till Olympic is over. Wrist injury gonna take sometime to heal and recover. Hopefully She will fully fit before Olympic. Otherwise defending the title is almost impossible for China without Zhu Ting.

If Zhu Ting is still hurt or injured during the tournament, the coach can use her as a middle blocker. I feel she is the best blocker on the team. She has great instincts of where the hitter will hit to, she is tall and her hang time is very good. She is one of the more effective blockers against Egonu.

Thailand win title in Women’s Volleyball at SEA Games for 12th successive time

The different in strength and overall qualities of the team between Thai and the rest are just too great . Thai can still win even with their reserve members. Reply
