Italy earned their 12th consecutive participation in the Olympic Games and completed the line up in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics from the FIVB International Qualifier.

POOL C (Bari, Italy)

Pool C hosts Italy wrecked Serbia in the key match of the FIVB International Qualifier to advance to the Men’s Volleyball Tournament of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, which they did not miss since 1976: 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-19).

Italy took revenge on Serbia for having the major role in the elimination from the last year’s FIVB World Championship (Serbia won by a 3-0 in the Top 6). How the Eastern European side was helpless in front of the packed stands at the PalaFlorio in Bari (nearly 5,500 spectators) shows the fact that it did not make a single block in the first set, while its main weapon Aleksandar Atanasijević finished the match with only 2 points! He was replaced in the second set but was returned in the third.

Ivan Zaytsev top-scored for the “Azzurri” with 13 points. He was the most deserving for all aces of his team (3). Marko Ivović scored 7 points for Serbia.

Italy joined Argentina, Poland, USA, Russia and Brazil who have qualified earlier today. Japan secured an automatic berth as Olympic hosts.

OG qualification m/w seems to be a good income for FIVB. 11 plus 11 tournaments for men/women... How much has to organiser pay to the FIVB? The qualification key is not fair - compare a strong European NTs will have now only one group, America two... I suppose that instead of a snow volleyball, FIVB should try to extend the numbers of participating NTs on OG from 12 to 16.. Then from Europe and also Asia could qualify more NTs... Second posibility is to focus only on quality and not regional principle..

It seems that profit is the only mandate for FIVB. Crazy schedule, ridiculous VNL structure, World League tournament in Brazil a few years ago on the outside court on the temperature of 12C, outrageous qualifications for Olympic games where world and europian champions have to qualify for the final tournament, regional principle for a sport where 90% of best teams are on one continent.

I fully understand that FIVB, the volleyball need money. On the internet there is a document: ' Invitation for Bid FIVB Volleyball Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament 2019'. There is specified a Hosting fee - the minimum sum..... On another hand, fans expect top TV coverage. As for me, I noticed this year a positive progress in quality.. I was pretty satisfied, except for FIVB TV commentators.. Only one understands vollleyball, and rules well... Other ones should take some special volleyball courses. Second option for commentators is to invite top former players, or referees, coaches with good, understandable English, from all over the world...
As for resources- there should be carried out some independent analyses on drawbacks, reserves in the management of this sport , with a goal to make it more attractive for TV sport channels, sponsors, fans...

They should just make the continental championships this year the Olympic Qualification to reduce the number of useless tournaments. Otherwise, the continental championships are useless because they no longer give world ranking points. Particularly for Asia, where Iran has not finished well since 2013 because they do not care about the tournament and send a weaker team instead of their main team.

I don't like the comment that Balkestein-Grothues underperformed! We all know she is there to receive and defend. As you said: 0 aces for Brazil, so she did a great job! Aswell did Schoot, who was almost perfect in receive and defence! Reply

WC 2019 W: Brazil beat weakened team of Serbia in thriller, China win Asian derby

Because the VNL consists of teams that have been invited by the FIVB, rather than have truly qualified for it based on competitive criteria. These teams (e.g. Belgium & Slovenia with the men) would unjustifiedly lose a lot of points on the ranking because they didn't pay the FIVB enough to participate. on the other hand weak teams like South Korea would see their ranking go up just purely by participating.

In its current format the VNL is nothing but a worthless demonstration tournament of friendly games... :-(
