WC 2019 W: USA get help from Brazil in winning silver medal, Russia settle for bronze

By defeating Korea 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 16-25, 25-22), in Osaka, on the last day of the 12-team round-robin tournament in Japan, the National Team of the United States pocketed silver medal. The USA finished at 10-1, suffering their only loss to titleholders China. Thus, the North American side have reached the podium at the World Cup for the fifth consecutive time. Andrea Drews led the USA to the win with 24 points, while Chiaka Ogbogu set up as much as 7 kill blocks! Park Jeong-Ah noted 15 points for South Korea who came in sixth with 6-5.

The USA got help from Brazil who downed Russia and rejected their silver medal hopes. Thanks to Lorenne Teixeira who scored 19 points and Mara Leão who made 5 kill blocks, the “Seleção” beat Russia in four sets, partially 28-26, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-19. With this, Brazil finished the competition in fourth position with 7-4 but also prevented “Zbornaya” from taking silver. Nataliya Goncharova tallied 21 points in the match for the team coached by Sergio Busato, who had to settle for a bronze medal with 8-3.

China secured the gold medal yesterday and kept the perfect score in the competition (11-0). Lang Ping’s girls swept Argentina in three sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-12) with Gong Xiangyu notching 15 points and Yan Ni making 5 kill blocks. Lucía Fresco scored 13 points for the “Las Panteras”.
