One of the best-ever Canadian male volleyball players Gavin Schmitt announced his retirement.

Canadian and world star Schmitt has left volleyball. Indefinitely. At least, that’s what a 34-year-old opposite hitter of the Canada National Team posted on social media.

“Sometimes it’s tough to come up with the words. So, for now, I’ll say thanks for everything… Time for an indefinite break…” he wrote.

During his career, Schmitt played in the best leagues in the world, such as Russian, Turkish, Brazilian, and Polish. Injuries to which he was prone in the last few years speeded up his decision to retire. The last club for which Schmitt competed was South Korea’s Suwon KEPCO Vixtorm (2019/20). Actually, the four-year part of his career in this country was marked by some spectacular scoring displays of which the one in 2012, while wearing the jersey of Daejeon Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Bluefangs, put him in the second place in the world’s list of the men’s best scorers in a single match.

On a club level, Schmitt won the Korean Championship three times (all with Daejeon Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Bluefangs) and Korean Cup (Daejeon Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Bluefangs), Turkish Championship (Arkas Spor), Greek Championship (S.F.P. Olympiacos), and Greek Cup (S.F.P. Olympiacos) one time apiece.

Among individual awards, the MVP of the Korean Championship (two times) and MVP of the Turkish Championship (once) stand out. Schmitt’s biggest success with his country’s national team was winning the bronze medal in the 2017 FIVB World League.
